1. What platforms do Data-Trail's solutions support?
1. What platforms do Data-Trail's solutions support? - top A: All database solutions are cross-platform, ie they run on both Mac and Windows machines without modification.
2. Are databases customisable? - top A: Yes. Databases can be customised to meet specific requirements (eg unique report templates).
3. Can I try before I buy? - top A: Yes. You can download free trial versions of some of our products and we can also set up limited web-based trials for your evaluation (please contact sales@data-trail.co.uk).
4. How do I run a free trial? - top A: b) Download the appropriate trial version (ie Mac or Windows); c) Decompress the downloaded file (ie just double click Windows downloads or use the freely available StuffIt Expander for Mac downloads); d) Open the newly created folder and double click the START file (please allow a few seconds for the database to open).
5. What type of server can I use for a network solution? - top A: Databases can be hosted on Mac or Windows servers.
6. Do network solutions have to run on a dedicated server? - top A: No, but it is advantageous and it can be cost-effective to do so. A dedicated server provides fast and reliable data handling for dozens or even hundreds of simultaneous users. Even during high demand periods a dedicated server continues to function efficiently.
7. What do I need to run an 'online' database? - top A: You can access an online database through any web browser (eg from school or from home), but you will want a relatively fast internet connection (ie any broadband connection, not a dial up connection). Online databases are hosted via an external web server and you may query, edit or create new records through your browser. For example, you may call up the on-screen template for a particular class and enter the relevant assessment grades. Depending on the options you choose some additional software may be required.
8. How does one recover a damaged database file? - top A: Power glitches and software conflicts can occasionally corrupt database files. You may get a message telling you to contact the developer, or you may find that files are behaving erratically. If you suspect data corruption first backup your files, then use the following procedures: a) For 'Windows' press and hold Ctrl+Shift (for 'Macs' press and hold Com+Option) whilst double clicking the database application, until the Open Damaged File message appears; b) The recovery process will append 'Old' to your original files and generate a new set of recovered files; c) Open the new set of files and check that all is in order. As an additional precaution you may 'Save a Copy As ... compacted' giving the new files the same name as the original files; d) Finally, make a copy of these new files and import data from the recovered file. If you are unsure of these procedures or unsuccessful in your attempts to recover data, we may still be able to help. Please contact help@data-trail.co.uk. |
